I agree with Chris. In my experience, a constructive dialog between developers and management is in the best interest of both parties, as it may avoid unnecessary and useless development efforts. In case you are interested, have a look at the video “Make Impacts, Not Software” I linked to above, at about minute 45 Gojko starts with a specific example of what such a dialog may look like.
